Go Back
The origins of French toast date back to ancient times, with variations found in various cultures around the world. The French, of course, have long claimed the dish, referring to it as "pain perdu," which translates to "lost bread." This name references the use of stale bread that would otherwise go to waste. By soaking the bread in a mixture of eggs and milk, people found a delicious way to repurpose leftover bread, creating a dish that is both economical and indulgent.

Ingredients

4 slices of thick-cut bread (brioche or challah work well)

2 large eggs

1/2 cup milk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

1 tablespoon granulated sugar

1 medium tart apple (preferably Granny Smith), peeled and diced

1 tablespoon unsalted butter (for cooking)

Maple syrup, for serving

Powdered sugar, for optional dusting

Instructions

Prepare the Egg Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and granulated sugar until the mixture is smooth and well combined.

Incorporate the Apples: Gently fold the diced apples into the egg mixture, ensuring that each apple piece is well-coated in the mixture for even flavor.

Slice the Bread: Cut each slice of thick bread into strips that are approximately 1-inch wide to create dippers. Depending on the size of your bread slices, you should end up with around 12-16 dippers.

Heat the Skillet: In a large skillet or griddle, melt the butter over medium heat. Allow it to get bubbly and slightly golden, which helps to prevent sticking and enhances flavor.

Dip and Cook: Dip each bread strip into the egg-apple mixture, briefly soaking it for just a couple of seconds on each side to absorb some of the mixture. Carefully transfer the soaked strips to the skillet. Cook the dippers for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until they turn golden brown and develop a crispy exterior.

Serve Them Up: Once cooked, remove the dippers from the skillet and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to absorb any excess butter. Serve warm, with an optional dusting of powdered sugar on top and a side of maple syrup for dipping.

Savor the Moment!: These delightful French toast dippers make a perfect breakfast or brunch item and can even serve as a fun snack for any occasion!
