Croutons are small, toasted pieces of bread that have been seasoned to add flavor and texture to dishes. Historically, they find their roots in ancient cuisines, where stale bread was repurposed to avoid waste. From the French "croûton," meaning "little crust," croutons have evolved into a beloved garnish across various culinary traditions.

These delightful bites are not only a tasty topping for salads and soups but also a healthier alternative to traditional croutons. Made from whole wheat pita, they offer a light yet crispy texture that's perfect for any dish. This simple recipe allows you to customize flavors with seasonings of your choice, making it an easy way to elevate your culinary creations while enjoying the benefits of nutritious ingredients.

Ingredients

4 large whole wheat pita breads

1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil

2 teaspoons garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried thyme

1/2 teaspoon sea salt

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional for a bit of heat)

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional for a savory boost)

Instructions

Begin by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C) to ensure it reaches the right temperature while you prepare the croutons.

Carefully slice each pita bread into quarters, creating triangular pieces. For an extra crunchy texture, feel free to cut the triangles into smaller bite-sized pieces.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the olive oil, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, thyme, sea salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Whisk the mixture until it is well combined.

Add the chopped pita pieces to the bowl, then gently toss them in the seasoned oil until each piece is evenly coated with the flavorful mixture.

Spread the seasoned pita pieces in a single layer on a large baking sheet, ensuring that they are not overlapping; this will promote even cooking and crispiness.

If desired, sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese generously over the top of the pita pieces, adding a delightful cheesy layer to the croutons.

Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 15-20 minutes. Stir the croutons halfway through baking to promote even browning until they are golden and crispy.

Once baked, remove the croutons from the oven and allow them to cool on the baking sheet for an additional 5 minutes. This cooling period helps them to crisp up even further.

For storage, transfer your crunchy pita bread croutons to an airtight container if you're not consuming them immediately. They will remain fresh for up to a week!
