Ingredients

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup whole wheat flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg

½ cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature

¾ cup brown sugar, packed firmly

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

½ cup buttermilk (or regular milk)

1 cup fig jam (can be homemade or store-bought)

½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional for added crunch)

1 tablespoon granulated sugar (for topping)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare a muffin tin by lining it with paper liners or alternatively, greasing the cups with non-stick spray to prevent sticking.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium-sized bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Once combined, set aside for later use.

Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large mixing bowl, use an electric mixer on medium speed to cream together the softened butter and brown sugar. Beat the mixture for about 3-4 minutes until it becomes light and fluffy.

Incorporate Eggs and Vanilla: Add the eggs to the butter and sugar mixture one at a time, ensuring to beat well after each addition. Finally, mix in the vanilla extract until combined.

Whisk Wet Ingredients: In a separate smaller bowl, thoroughly whisk together the buttermilk and fig jam until they are well integrated.

Combine Mixtures: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the buttermilk and fig jam blend. Start with the dry ingredients and end with them as well. Mix until just combined; take care not to over-mix the batter. If desired, gently fold in the chopped walnuts or pecans for added texture.

Fill the Muffin Tins: Using a spoon or a cookie scoop, evenly distribute the batter among the prepared muffin cups, filling each about two-thirds full to allow room for rising.

Add Sugar Topping: Sprinkle a small amount of granulated sugar on top of each filled muffin cup to add a touch of sweet crunch when baked.

Bake: Place the muffin tin in the preheated oven and bake for 18-20 minutes. Check for doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center of a muffin; it should come out clean when they are fully baked.

Cool: After baking, allow the muffins to cool in the pan for 5 minutes. Then, carefully transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Enjoy: These delightful muffins can be served warm or at room temperature, making them a perfect treat to savor the sweet and savory flavors of fig jam!
